Video Ad Duration: What Converts

Last verified July 15, 2026. Durations cross-checked against live winning video ads inside TrendTrack’s Ads module on a paid account.

You have a good offer. The creative looks clean. But your 45-second video ad dies at three seconds of average watch time, and you keep asking the same question: how many seconds should it be?

That is the wrong question, and it is quietly draining your ad budget.

The best video ad length is not a number you copy from a blog. It is a range that shifts with the platform, the placement, and how warm the viewer already is.

Below is what tends to convert on Meta, TikTok and YouTube, sorted by funnel stage, plus a way to stop guessing entirely and read the durations of ads that are actually winning in your niche.

There is no single best video ad length. On the Meta feed, 15 to 30 seconds usually converts; in Reels and TikTok, 9 to 21 seconds with a hook under three seconds; on YouTube skippable, 30 to 60 seconds or more holds because viewers can skip at five. Length follows the platform and the funnel stage, not a rule.

There is no single “best” length

Ask “how long should a video ad be” and you get a number. Ask what the number is for, and the number falls apart.

What actually decides whether a video sells is not its total length. It is watch time, the strength of the first frame, and whether the format matches how people scroll that platform.

A 12-second ad that loses everyone at second two is worse than a 40-second ad that earns each second. Duration is a lever, not a target.

Think of length as a budget for attention, not a rule to obey. Every second you add is a second the viewer has to choose to keep watching, so you spend those seconds only when the payoff is worth it.

So before you time your edit, decide where it runs and who it talks to. If you are still building the creative itself, start with our guide on how to find winning ad creatives, then come back to fine-tune the length.

What converts on Meta (Facebook and Instagram)

Meta is two different animals inside one ad account. The feed and the Reels or Stories placements reward very different edits.

In the Facebook and Instagram feed, 15 to 30 seconds is the reliable band for cold traffic. Long enough to land a problem and a product, short enough to keep watch time high.

In Reels and Stories, go shorter, usually under 15 seconds, and make it feel native rather than produced. Meta will happily serve a two-minute video, but retention falls off a cliff if the offer does not arrive early.

Placement Sweet spot Why it works
Facebook / IG feed 15 to 30s Room for problem plus product, watch time still holds.
Reels / Stories Under 15s Native pace, offer must land in the first seconds.
TikTok 9 to 21s Feels organic, immediate hook, story or demo pace.
YouTube skippable 30 to 60s+ Viewer can skip at five, so earned attention can run long.
YouTube bumper 6s Non-skippable, one message, built for reach and recall.

The honest move is to test more than one length against the same offer. A 15-second cut and a 30-second cut of the same creative often behave very differently, and the winner is not always the one you expect.

What converts on TikTok

TikTok punishes anything that looks like a TV commercial. The winning band sits around 9 to 21 seconds, and the edit has to feel like a post, not a pitch.

Longer can work when the video tells a genuine story or runs a satisfying demo. But the real lever is the opening, not the runtime.

A practical shortcut: film a slightly longer organic-style clip, then cut it down to the tightest version that still lands. The shorter cut usually becomes your paid winner, while the longer one feeds your organic feed.

You can study native pacing for free in TikTok’s Creative Center before you shoot a single clip.

The 3-second rule: most scrolls are lost before your length ever matters. If the first 3 seconds do not stop the thumb, no runtime saves the ad. Fix the hook before you argue about seconds.

What converts on YouTube and Google

Google video splits into formats that each have their own clock. Getting the format right matters more than hitting a magic number.

Skippable in-stream ads can run 30 to 60 seconds or longer, because the viewer can skip at five. If your first five seconds earn the stay, a longer story is allowed.

Bumper ads are locked at 6 seconds, non-skippable, and work as one-message reach plays. Shorts follow the vertical, short, native logic of TikTok.

Length by funnel stage

The same product needs different runtimes at different stages. Who is watching changes what length converts more than any platform rule does.

Cold traffic needs short and scroll-stopping. You are buying attention from people who have never heard of you, so every second past the hook is a chance to lose them.

Retargeting is where longer earns its place. These viewers already know you, so demos, guarantees and objection-handling can run 60 seconds or more without hurting results.

Funnel stage Typical length Job of the video
Cold 9 to 21s Stop the scroll, land one clear problem and product.
Consideration 15 to 40s Demo the product, show it working, build belief.
Retargeting 30 to 60s+ Handle objections, prove trust, push the offer.

Length and copy work the same way here, they stretch as the viewer warms up. The same logic governs how ad copy length works across the funnel.

Short versus long: what each buys you

Neither short nor long is better on its own. Each one buys you something and costs you something, and the trade only makes sense once you know the placement and the stage.

Short creatives are cheap to test and easy to keep native, which is exactly what cold traffic needs. Longer creatives buy room for proof, and that room is what turns a warm viewer into a buyer.

Short wins when

  • Traffic is cold and has to be stopped mid-scroll.
  • You are testing many hooks cheaply and fast.
  • The placement is Reels, Stories or TikTok.
  • The product sells itself in one clear demo.

Long earns its place when

  • You are retargeting people who already know you.
  • The offer is high-ticket and needs trust.
  • There are real objections to answer.
  • The hook is strong enough to survive past five seconds.

The mistakes that waste budget almost always come from ignoring that trade. Running one length across every placement, padding a cold ad past its hook, or cutting a retargeting video too short all leave money on the table.

Match the runtime to the job, and length stops being a guess. Ignore the job, and no number saves the ad.

How to read the real winning durations

Every range above is a starting point, not gospel. The durations that convert in your niche are already visible in the ads your competitors are running right now.

Instead of guessing, read them. In TrendTrack’s Ads module you can filter 337M+ ads by Media Type, set a Video Duration range from 0 to 1,200 seconds, and rank the results by Ad Rank, so you see how long the winning creatives actually run.

The Ads module filtered to Meta video ads, with the Video Duration range set from 0 to 1,200 seconds and sorted by Longest Active. Checked July 15, 2026.

Three filters turn a vague question into a shortlist you can watch:

1
Filter
Set Media Type to Video so images and carousels drop out.
2
Range
Set the Video Duration range you want to test, from 0 to 1,200s.
3
Sort
Sort by Ad Rank or Longest Active to surface the proven winners.

The pattern gets sharper when you cross two signals. Sort by Longest Active, then read the Video Duration on the ads that have survived the longest, and you see the runtimes your competitors keep paying to run.

An ad that has stayed live for months at a given length is a stronger signal than any benchmark. It has already passed the only test that counts, someone keeps funding it.

Now the durations you are looking at are not averages from an article. They are the lengths that are still spending in your market today.

FAQ

What is the best length for a video ad?

There is no single number. On the Meta feed, 15 to 30 seconds usually converts; in Reels and TikTok, 9 to 21 seconds with a hook under three seconds; on YouTube skippable, 30 to 60 seconds or more. Length follows the platform and the funnel stage, not a global rule.

How long should a Facebook video ad be?

For cold traffic in the feed, aim for 15 to 30 seconds with a visual hook in the first second. Reels and Stories perform shorter, often under 15 seconds. Meta allows much longer, but watch time drops fast if the offer does not arrive early.

Are shorter video ads always better?

No. Short wins for cold traffic because it has to stop the scroll, but retargeting and high-ticket tolerate longer runtimes because the viewer is already interested and needs proof, guarantees and objection handling. The right length depends on who is watching and where.

What is the ideal TikTok ad length?

The sweet spot sits around 9 to 21 seconds, with a native hook that looks like organic content, not an ad. Longer can work if the video tells a story or runs a demo, but the first three seconds are the real lever, not the total runtime.

How do I know which video length is winning for my niche?

Instead of guessing, read the ads that are already winning. In TrendTrack’s Ads module you filter by Media Type set to Video, by a Video Duration range from 0 to 1,200 seconds, and by Ad Rank, then look at how long the longest-running creatives in your niche actually run.

The bottom line

Short wins cold. Long earns its place once the viewer is warm. Everything in between is a match between placement, format and funnel stage.

Pick a range from the tables above as your starting point, then confirm it against real winners before you commit budget. The guessing stops the moment you read the durations that are actually spending in your market.
